We have been enjoying a very pleasant run up to Christmas. We went to the Play, Pie and a Pint Christmas Panto with Gordon and Morag on Thursday and it was very funny and very Glaswegian. It was called Weans in the Woodlands and there were lots of topical jokes and of course a man in the front row was singled out for special attention from the flamboyant Dame. Afterwards the four of us went for coffee in a wee café in Byres Road.
On Friday we had a lovely lunch and chat with Gerry and Janis in All Bar One, and then on Sunday we met up with Heather, Ewan and all of our UK based young folk plus most of their partners for our traditional pre Christmas get together. To our consternation we found out a few weeks ago that Metropolitan, our favourite drinks venue, has closed down! So on Heather’s recommendation, James and I booked Home, which is next door to Café Gandolfi in Albion Street. First we had an excellent lunch with Heather and Ewan and Andrew at the Anchor Line, and then strolled down to the Merchant City where Davie and Chanel had already arrived; in the end there were eleven of us in total. We had booked a booth but rather annoyingly we had been bumped to a table on the mezzanine. This turned out to be absolutely fine and a bit quieter than downstairs, and we all had a festive and social time. Heather was a hero for coming out even though she had an ear infection, and Ally has a bad cold and was coughing a lot but still wanted to be there. Heartwarmingly Andrew, Ally, Cat, Jennifer, Ryan, Davie and Chanel all stayed on in town when us senior folk headed home; I love that they all get on so well.
In between all of this socialising we finished wrapping all of the presents and took delivery of our Sainsbury’s Christmas order. Ally and Cat stayed with us on Sunday night then Ally stayed on while Cat returned to Dunlop after a wee brunch with me on Monday.
And here we are on Christmas Eve! James and I watched It’s a Wonderful Life in the afternoon and then had dinner with Ally and the three of us watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. It has stood the test of time very well and was laugh out loud funny. James and Ally prepared the turkey, watched closely by Tom! And then James remembered that he had forgotten to make the trifle! We swung into action and managed to get it done except for the cream which will go on tomorrow morning.
